How to Install Microsoft Windows XP

Below are the steps required to install the standard version of Microsoft Windows XP. It is important to realize that some computer manufacturers have their own proprietary version of Windows XP. These specialized OEM versions may use a recovery disc or have a hidden partition that installs Windows XP. Therefore, the steps below may not all apply to how Windows XP is installed on your computer

How to Install Microsoft Windows XP

If the following steps do not apply to your situation, we recommended you contact your computer manufacturer for additional help.

Note: If you are re-installing Windows XP on a computer that already has Windows XP on it that works, we recommend that you backup important personal files first. The Windows installation process includes the erasing of the hard drive in the computer, resulting in all your personal files being deleted.

STEPS-

  1. The standard Microsoft Windows XP installation CD is bootable. Therefore, start by placing the Windows XP CD in your computer and reboot.
  2. As the computer boots, a prompt to Press any key to boot from CD should be shown on the screen. When you see that message, immediately press any key. If you do not get this prompt or are unable to boot from the disc, run through the booting from a CD troubleshooting steps.
  3. When the Windows XP setup menu appears, press ENTER to continue the setup.
  4. Next, the Windows XP licensing agreement will be shown. If you agree to the licensing agreement, press F8.
  5. Next, the install process gives you the option to repair Windows XP or to install a fresh copy. Press ESC to install a new copy of Windows XP.
  6. Next, the partition setup will appear. If a partition already exists and you do not plan on having multiple operating systems on the computer, we recommend that you delete the existing partition before continuing the setup. You will know if a partition exists if you see anything other than Unpartitioned space listed on the screen.
Note: When deleting a partition, ALL information will be lost.
    • To delete the partition:

Select the partition and press D, then ENTER. Press L to delete the partition and then press ENTER

Note: If you have multiple partitions, we suggest deleting all partitions, unless you plan on using these partitions. Deleting each of the other partitions can be done using the same steps above for each additional partition.
    • To create the partition:

If you started with a new hard drive or have deleted existing partitions, select the unpartitioned space to create a new partition, then press C. Specify the size of the partition in MB (the default is to use all available space) and press ENTER.

  7. Once the new partition has been created for Windows XP to be installed on, press ENTER to install Windows XP.
  8. You need to select whether the drive will use FAT or NTFS. We suggest NTFS for users who are not sure what file system they want to use. After selecting the file system, press Enter.
  9. The computer will start formatting the hard drive, which can take several minutes or more, depending on the size of the partition.
  10. After the format process has completed, Windows will begin installing the files and then take you through a wizard to continue with the remainder of the installation and setup.

How to Install Windows 7 and 8 using a USB Flash Drive

Nowadays DVD drives are becoming non-existent as the size of our PCs continue shrink and new form factors are emerging. Microsoft distributes Windows 7 and Windows 8 on physical discs or images of DVDs called ISO data files that are typically burned up to physical media.

It has become problem as quite a few of laptops and tablets no longer ship with DVD drives. The best way to install windows on these devices is to use a USB(UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS) flash drive that contains the Windows installation documents. As an extra advantage, modern USB flash drives are typically much faster than DVDs resulting in a quick install.

 Perticulors you will need:

  1. Windows 7 or Windows 8 ISO file and WinRAR or a burned DVD with the install source files.
  2. 4 GB USB flash drive for Windows 7.
You may need 8 GB USB flash drive for some Windows 8 images.

Option 1 - The Manual Method

1. Preparing the USB flash drive

  • Let's begin. Firstly we have to format the USB flash drive to remove any existing data on the drive. For That Click on My Computer Or Computer to bring up your drives as shown below.

How to Install Windows 7 and 8 using a USB Flash Drive

  • Next, right click on the removable USB flash drive Shown in Picture 1. and select Format.
  • Click Start and the USB flash drive will be formatted.

2. Preparing the source files

  • Now Extract the setup from a Windows 7/8 ISO image file.  If you have a physical Windows install DVD then skip to step 3.
  • To extract the files from the ISO file you will need WinRAR. If you don't already have WinRAR download it and Install now.
  • Once you have installed WinRAR navigate to the ISO file in explorer and right click on the file and select the bottom Extract to <folder name> option.

  • The ISO file will now be extracted to a sub-folder with the same name as the ISO file. This can take a few minutes to complete.

3. Copying source files to USB flash drive

  • The final step is to copy the install source onto the USB flash drive in a way that will allow the Windows 7/8 install to boot up.
  • The trick here is to use XCopy.
  •  Depending on where your source files are located there are two different methods to copy the files onto the flash drive.
# First One-Using extracted source files

How to Install Windows 7 and 8 using a USB Flash Drive

  • Open up command prompt and navigate to the directory you extracted the source files from the ISO file with the CD command. Then, run XCOPY *.* J: /e and hit Enter to start the copy. Be sure to replace J with the drive letter of your USB flash drive.
# Second One-Using a physical Windows install DVD

How to Install Windows 7 and 8 using a USB Flash Drive

  • The instructions are slightly different when using a physical DVD.  Open up command prompt and type XCOPY D:  J: /e and hit Enter. Replace D with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive and replace J with the drive letter of your USB flash drive.

5. Installing Windows 7/8 from the USB flash drive
  • Once the file copy has completed you are ready to plug the USB flash drive into your computer. Turn it on and hit the keyboard shortcut to bring up the boot menu for your model. Typically it is F12 or F1.
  • After you select your USB flash drive the Windows 7/8 installation should begin to load. At this point, installing Windows is the same as on a normal laptop or a desktop.

Option 2 - Automatic Method

How to Install Windows 7 and 8 using a USB Flash Drive

  • Microsoft now has a free utility that will automatically make a bootable USB flash drive from a Windows 7/8 ISO image file. Simply download the tool, specify the location of your ISO file and the wizard will do everything for you.
